About the Courts

Our Working Hours 08:30-17:00

(a) To take the necessary measures for the general functioning of the judiciary, its orderly work, the continuation of judges and public officials affiliated to the courts, the efficient conduct of business, the training of judges and the protection of the dignity and honor of the profession, and

(b) To make final decisions on the appointment of judges, their advancement in the profession, temporary or permanent changes to their duties or places of duty, termination of their duties and disciplinary matters.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is also the President of the Board. Although all judges are elected and appointed by the Board, the election and appointment of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Supreme Court Judges must be approved by the President.

Article 141 of the TRNC Constitution, which entered into force on May 7, 1985, regulates the establishment and functioning of the Supreme Court of Justice. Accordingly, the Supreme Court of Justice consists of a total of twelve members, including the Chief Justice and seven members, one member each appointed by the President and the Assembly of the Republic, the Chief Public Prosecutor and one member elected by the Bar Association. Although the term of office of the appointed and elected members is three years, there is no legal impediment for them not to be re-elected after the term. As foreseen by both the relevant article of our Constitution and the Supreme Court of Justice Law No. 35/85, the council has two main duties.

TRNC COURTS

TRNC Courts, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the courts are located in district centers.

In the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, considering the rule of law, legal disputes are examined, and trial activities are carried out to ensure justice, and the TRNC courts have the jurisdiction to try all legal disputes. So, which are the courts in Cyprus?

In legal disputes, the court that has the authority to first hear the case and then decide the case is known as the district court. In this context, there are district courts in every district of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. So, which are these courts?

Nicosia District Court

Girne District Court

Gazimağusa District Court

Güzelyurt District Court

Lefke District Court

İskele District Court

We can say that more than one judge serves in the district courts depending on the type of case. The Chief Judge of the District Court, the Senior Judge of the District Court and the Judge of the District Court are at the head of the district courts.

TRNC Legal System

In Northern Cyprus, the judiciary is free and its structure is guaranteed by law. A total of 22 articles between Articles 136 and 157 of the Constitution of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are devoted to the order and functioning of the judiciary. The independence of the courts, the guarantees of the judges, and the principle of the rule of law are included in the constitution.

TRNC JUDICIAL SYSTEM

The legal system in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is Anglo-Saxon.

The legislation applied in our courts is determined by Article 38 of the Courts Act No. 9/76. According to this article, the legislation applied is as follows:

(a) Constitution

(b) Legislation in force, as long as it is not contrary to the Constitution

(c) General rules and principles of general law, as long as they are not contrary to or incompatible with the Constitution

(d) Fundamental Rules

(e) Legislation on Maritime Law in force on 21 December 1963
